Program Notes: During 2020 Colorado experienced its worst-ever fire season to date with approximately 625,356 acres burned. At the height of fire season from about August to November, the air was constantly tinged with ever-present smoke and ash serving as a reminder of the fires blazing through Colorado. The growing number and intensity of wildfires in Colorado serve as a testament to the growing presence of climate change and global warming within our world and our community.
2020 was a hard year for everyone. It often felt like a raging fire that was burning out of control. But fires are not always bad. Yes, they destroy and cause pain and suffering, but they are also a crucial part of a forest’s lifecycle. In Colorado, there is a special tree called the Lodge Pole Pine that has serotinous cones, which only realize their seeds in extreme heat such as a fire. The lodgepole pine is literally born from fire and can not grow without it. Amidst the blazing fire which has been the past year, it is my hope that a better, kinder, world will emerge from the ashes like the lodgepole pine as we start to heal.
